New Marvel’s Midnight Suns Trailer Highlights Combat System

The latest video for Marvel’s Midnight Suns highlights the strategic combat system, cards, and the powerful Heroism mechanic.

A new trailer for Marvel’s Midnight Suns has been released to highlight the combat system for players. Marvel’s Midnight Suns features interesting character twists, with pairings of iconic antagonists and deviations unique to the game’s canon, making the new entry int the Marvel gaming universe an unpredictable and engaging experience.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns is a tactical RPG published by 2K and developed by Firaxis Games, the same studio responsible for games in the Civilization and XCOM series. In the game’s plot, players can create their own protagonist known as the Hunter, who is said to be the child of the game’s villain, Lilith, and the person who defeated her in the events prior to the main story. Lilith is revived after centuries of slumber, and will do anything to fulfill an ancient prophecy and summon her master, Chthon. To face Lilith, players will team up with iconic Marvel characters such as Wolverine, Scarlet Witch, and Iron Man, and master the combat system highlighted in the new trailer.

The combat trailer for Marvel’s Midnight Suns shows that players will first have to select a team of three characters and choose their abilities. The abilities are presented through a deck of specific cards for each hero, and grant different effects such as healing, dealing damage, buffs, and summoning an ally temporarily. Once the player has equipped their team, it is time for turn-based combat to launch devastating blows and defeat enemies, always paying attention to the positive and negative statuses caused and suffered. Ghost Rider will be in Marvel’s Midnight Suns with powerful skills previewed in the new trailer.

One interesting aspect shown in the trailer is how throwing enemies makes them interact with their environment, something not exactly common in tactical games. While Midnight Suns explores the dark side of Marvel’s heroes, another highlight of the video is the Heroism mechanic in which some cards in the player’s deck give Heroism points, and other cards need Heroism points to be used. When the player accumulates the required amount of points to use a card, it’s time to unleash devastating hero moves from characters like Blade. Although he’s been away from the silver screen for quite some time, the legendary Blade is in Marvel’s Midnight Suns with his versatile abilities.

Players are used to seeing Marvel’s heroes and villains in fighting and action-adventure games, so Marvel’s Midnight Suns offers an interesting twist by adding the strategy factor. The game gives limited movement options and reinforces the importance of thinking through moves, something common in turn-based games, adding to the eight difficulty levels that will be available. Midnight Suns will also have a season pass and will introduce DLC characters, making Marvel’s Midnight Suns the time for Morbius’ redemption at least in a way.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns launches December 2 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, with PS4, Switch, and Xbox One versions coming later.
